Realm AMA Recap
Realm is an NFT play-to-earn metaverse with unique micro verses and living NFT pets.
On September 17th, Matthew Larby and Joban Thomas, CEO and CPO of Realm respectively, joined us to answer our questions.
Matthew L, Realm founder, and CEO
I have been working in tech for about 10 years now. I previously built a business with Joban where we invented an internal GPS system with a mobile software layer, we eventually sold that business to a tech billionaire.
Joban T, Realm founder, and CEO
I have been involved in tech startups and crypto for many years. I love building great products with super clean UX and elegant solutions. I take the role of CPO, Creative Director and have also been a CTO and technical consultant for large brands and startups.
Questions from the CryptoRank team
#1. Can you tell us about Realm? What problems do you solve, both in the space and for the community?
Matthew L.: – Our main aim with Realm is to make a mainstream adoptable metaverse that is owned by the people that participate in it. So if you explore, play games, or build you earn tokens and the world becomes your own. The 3 exact problems we see are metaverses are not user friendly and this is a problem that has hurt decentraland etc. The 2nd problem is it’s really hard to build in metaverses and this limits their growth and the subsequent growth of the economy. The final problem is the land structure where you can only build in a metaverse if your own land is bad for growth as not everyone has money to buy land. Realm fixes all these problems.
We solve them in 3 key ways: The structure of the Realm universe consists of a central metropolis with small shop spaces that contain portals to Realms. It means you can have a very large realm connected to a small space in the central metropolis, so now we have the concept of infinite space in the metaverse, while still allowing people to own very rare space in the metropolis that might have lots of footfall
The second problem is about how difficult it is to build and we are making simple creator tools that use templates and blocks to easily make spaces. We also allow you to procedurally create realms.
Finally the 3rd problem. Anybody can create a realm for free and if it is popular we will connect to a communal portal in the metropolis. As a realm gets more visitors and becomes more popular the realm owner will earn more $REALM and be able to add extra functions to their realms.
#2. Could you shortly describe the milestones Realm has achieved, and about your upcoming plans?
Joban T.: – Sure, the next plans in terms of technical development look like the following:
We’re going to be extremely very focused on the product, and have an awesome team building this innovative metaverse at a rapid pace. Our roadmap is heavily focused on mobile for this year, and allowing everyone to be able to create their own world is a key goal that we believe will elevate the metaverse movement.
Our future roadmap also includes working with key partners to deliver some awesome customized metaverses. We are undertaking a host of partnerships with awesome NFT artists who are building realms, we have some fun stuff on the horizon, you will be able to race buggies around in evolvers and get NFT tattoos on avatars. With some artists, we are building 5 realms where you can go to nightclubs, trade-in marketplaces, etc.
We ultimately want to allow users to create mini-games such as racing, platforming, fall guys style battle royale, and all sorts of other types. If people can create amazing digital experiences and monetize them in the Realm ecosystem then we are well on the way to achieving our goal.
Matthew L.: – We’ve already achieved a lot of milestones, for example breaking records on Launchpool for amount staked in an AME, and for selling out on Polkastarter in under 3 minutes. We are just launching two key initiatives – the Portal Mining Event and the community liquidity program.
Questions from Twitter
#1. How many different ways can we earn $REALM tokens on your platform? Can we earn $REALM tokens when we collect rare NFTs and play games?
Matthew L.: – 2 key ways to earn $REALM play to earn and build to earn. You can explore realms and you will discover rare NFTs and $REALM tokens, you need to collect Realm shards, plant trees, keep your Realmie (pet) companion happy and walk them around the metaverse. We are also doing a build-to-earn campaign where you earn $REALM for building realms. You can of course build a realm and sell anything in it to earn $REALM.
#2. What are the features you will launch in Realm for 2d and 3d characters? Can you tell us about the 2d 3d characters you will add to Realm?
Joban T.: – Sure! We’ve got some awesome plans for avatars, realms, and accessories. You can customize your avatar with NFTs found through playing the game, or trade the items if you find a rare one. We’re also working with other projects such as Polychain Monsters to bring their monsters into Realm, and also working on some amazing realms based on the IP of 2D characters too. You’ll even be able to buy NFT avatars from famous artists such as KidEight in the future!
There are all sorts of 3D Realms to accompany you on your journey through the realms.
#3. Currently, most projects and platforms are in English. How will Realm reach non-English local communities? Do you have any plan for them to better understand your project?
Matthew L.: – Yes definitely, we are using app localization to translate all communication into local languages. A metaverse needs to be internationally accepted. We’ve also started setting up global Telegram communities so Realm players, creators, and collectors can join in on the journey and adventure in their own native language. Right now, we have three: Asia, Turkey, and Vietnam set up. Soon we’ll be adding a Spanish group, Nordic group, and Indian group.
Questions from Telegram
#1. I can read that the user can move to different realms through an infinite number of micro verses, but is it true that the user’s pets can also be translated? Or can each pet only exist in a certain kingdom? One of the Realm products that focuses on creating a kingdom will allow copyright sharing, but actually, this will not cause problems in NFT, because one of its qualities cannot be shared.
Matthew L.: – The Realmies pets can travel to all kingdoms in fact they love to explore and travel and that is one of the key gameplay mechanics. Just remember some Realmies have different abilities and will be better matched to certain kingdoms (realms)
#2. How do we win a limited number of Realmie NFTs that will become Realmies and represent kingdoms? How are Realmie NFTs different from other NFTs? What is Realm’s view of the metaverse? How will Realm contribute to the development of the metaverse ecosystem? Why do you believe in the metaverse?
Joban T.: – You can get hold of your Realmie in a number of ways – we will be dropping a limited set of Genesis Realmies for the auction within the next few weeks, or you can earn them from playing and leveling up your character in the metaverse.
#3. I see that you’ve set aside 25% of the entire token supply to reward creators and players on your platform, so when do you envision that the 25% will be fully distributed to the players and after that how do you intend to keep rewarding players? Have you come up with a way to help top up this fund so that players will continue to be incentivized?
Joban T.: – Hey there, good question – the release of these funds will be over the next 5 years – we are very long term with the project. It will not end in 5 years however since a portion of platform fees will also top up the foundation! We want to build a creative ecosystem that is self-sustaining – play to earn, build to earn, art and gaming all together in one metaverse.
